Knight Watch: Is It Odd Man Out And Odd Idea In?
By Knight Pierce Hirst
A group of Tokyo chiropractors has developed a new therapy for reducing stress. They provide this therapy from the back of a truck named “The Venting Place” and the cost depends on what you need to smash to feel better. Cups cost $2 and plates cost $11. Protective gear is provided and there are concrete slabs in the truck at which to hurl the crockery. The chiropractors have even eliminated possible stress about wasting cups and plates by recycling them into more cups and plates. In tough financial times this therapy is proving to be a smashing success. The Canis-Resort, a luxury boarding facility for dogs located near the Munich airport, is also proving to be a success. While owners are away, their dogs can stay in comfortable lodges – complete with an individual sitter – for $107.70 a night. The resort has occupancy for 40 dogs, as well as day-care for travelers not away overnight and 24/7 check-in service. Gourmet food and designer grooming are available and for another extra charge there’s gate-to-gate service which brings the dogs to airport gates to welcome their owners home. Obviously, this keeps the owners from going to the dogs. For people going to the afterlife there’s a new trend in funerals. Increasing numbers of people – especially the tech-savvy and young – are being buried with their cell phones. One explanation is that surrounding loved ones with things they held dear is the 21st century version of King Tut’s tomb. Another explanation is that so many people are never without their phones, putting a cell phone in the coffin provides a comforting feeling of continuity for family and friends. Then there’s the desire to still feel connected to the deceased. That gives new meaning to the Verizon Wireless slogan “Can you hear me now?” Finally, there are “GotchaBoxes”. These slickly designed boxes are the brainchild of graphic designer Arik Nordby. Because of the graphics on the outside of the boxes, they look like they contain real gadgets. For example, there’s the USB toaster that plugs into a laptop to toast a single piece of bread; the Visor-organizer, an alternative to the embarrassing Fanny Pack; and the Peaceful Progressive Smoke Alarm, featuring restful sounds of the rain forest. At $7.99 each, these are gift boxes for pranksters. On the inside flap it says “Gotcha!” Having sold more than 50,000 boxes it seems Nordby’s humor isn’t boxed in.
